Help for use of Bus timetable for Slovenia

The bus timetable of Slovenia uses web technology to search for direct bus lines between two bus stops in Slovenia. The data was prepared at the Ministry of Transport. The program also offers the links to web pages or phone numbers of the bus line operators, where you can get more information.

The bus stops - starting point and the destination - are entered in two steps.

in the first step you should enter some characteristic characters of the name. We could specify the starting point by entering Bled, Poh (for Pohorje), Ljubl (for Ljubljana), Marib (for Maribor). Because Slovenian language uses cases where words can end with various suffixes (e.g. Bled, Bleda, Bledu, pri Bledu, z Bledom) it is discouraged to use full names e.g. Pohorje or Ljubljana. This practice would cause to omit the possibility to have certain cases of names or abbreviations to be included in the list of places in the second step. Writing to many characters could also lead to errors in spelling.

If no starting point matches the characteristic characters, the portal will request new start point entry. If no destination matches the characteristic characters, the portal automatically will supply all possible destinations from the set of start points.

In the second step the web application will offer list of names that match the characteristic patterns entered in the first step. If we entered „Bled“, we could get list of „Bled“, „Bled gmajna“, „Bled grad“, „Bled Mlino“, … Selo/Bledu“.

If we leave the Destination field empty, the web application would offer all bus stops directly accessible from the set of the starting points. If we get set of the starting points consisting of one point only, we would get the list of accessible destination from that one and only starting point.

If we leave the staring point empty, we would get the list of approximately 5000 bus stops in Slovenia. You would probably use that option only in emergency if you really do not know any place at all.

Schematic map of Bled and surroundings

If we enter „Bled“ as the starting point (meaning the main bus station at Bled) and empty destination, the second step would give you locations in the surroundings of Bled and also more remote places such as all stops between Ljubljana and Bohinj.

If we enter „Bled grad“ (meaning Bled Castle) and empty destination, the second step would give us possible bus stops „Bled“, „Bled Zaka“, „Pristava/Bledu“, … „Vintgar K“ (all places near Bled). Ljubljana is is not an accessible place as only local busses go to the Bled castle. If you specify „Bled Mlino“ as the starting point (situated at the main road Ljubljana - Bohinj) the possible destinations are also places along the main road such as Ljubljana and Bohinj.

As general rule we could suggest that if you travel along the big cities, the best strategy is to enter some characters for the start and for the destination. It it quite likely that you will find direct bus line.

If there is no direct connection between the selected points, the web will offer you all possible destinations from the starting point in the the third step. There is at least one bus line to the offered list of destinations.

If you want to travel to small and remote places, try to get the accurate starting point and search for all possible places.

If you do not know how to get to a small remote place, try to take that as starting point, search for all accessible places and take the return trip. The buses drive always in both ways.

The report of a time table can be saved as bookmarks. You can spare the entering of the places by that. The bookmarks are marked as Bus: and relation. The bookmark will be valid as long as the bus stops do not get renamed.

For easy search of places it may be useful to know some abbreviations such as: Sl. for slovenska (Slovenian), Sp. for spodnja (lower), Sr. for srednja (middle), St. for stara (old), Šk. for škofja, Zg. for zgornja (upper). Some important points of may be: AC avtocesta (auto-route), GD gasilski dom (firefighters house), ZD zdravstveni dom (health building), ŽP železniška postaja (railway station). Some areas or larger cities may be abbreviated: Boh. for Bohinj, Kor. for Koroška (Carinthia), Kr. for Kranj, Kranjska, Poh. for Pohorje, Polh. for Polhov Gradec.

Some knowledge of Slovenian comes handy: like grad for castle, letališče for airport.

Days of week: ponedeljek - monday, torek - tuesday, sreda - wednesday, četrtek - thursday, petek - friday, sobota - saturday, nedelja - sunday.

Work and leasure: delavnik - work day, praznik - holiday, šola - school, razen - except.

Limitations of this portal: The time table data do not include bus lines where the start or final destination is out of Slovenia. The software does not detect two adjacent bus lines as one.
